Computational study on the design of airfoils for a fixed wing MAV

Sponsored by Agency for Defense Development (ADD)

Research Motivation

A Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) is defined as under 100 grams and 15 centimeters vehicle and operated in the range of low Reynolds number. In general, a MAV has poor longitudinal static stability because it has a low aspect ratio and laminar separation bubble changes the pitching moment characteristics.

Key Idea

A reflex airfoil (S5010) is chosen and then developed by modification and combinations of existing airfoil geometries to improve longitudinal static stability.

Results

Although the developed airfoils decrease maximum lift coefficient compared to the existing airfoil (i.e., S5010), their moment characteristics are enhanced in entire Angle of Attack.
