Research Motivation
As the concept of Regional Air Mobility (RAM) has emerged as a new transportation system over the world, South Korea has recently started considering the implementation of RAM with the aim of improving the connectivity of medium-distance transportation between cities. The current air traffic management systems operated in South Korea seem unsuitable to accommodate the upcoming RAM operations due to the characteristics of RAM; thus, the need for the development of decision support systems has been identified.
Key Idea
This research proposes a data-driven approach that leverages machine learning and optimization techniques. It consists of four different modules: 1) Corridor network generation module, 2) Flight path optimization module, 3) Corridor network operation optimization module, and 4) Aircraft separation and density analysis module. The following figure illustrates a notional sketch of a three-year (i.e., from 2023 to 2025) sponsored research led by Dr. Junghyun Kim.
